Polaroid came about as an interesting idea, where my professor had each of us students take a photograph with a polaroid, then destroy it. For the destruction of my polaroid photo, I tagged team with some friends using different methods to ruin it. The top left corner was done by grinding, the bottom left by electrocuting, the top right the photo was taped to a muffler and lost on a night drive, and the bottom right was portion was burned.Â
To recreate the pieces as a painting took some experimenting. Using gouache as the primary media I first painted in base colors, painted and poured on top of that, taped off some areas, then began details. For the top left, I drilled holes to symbolize the holes caused by the grinder. The bottom left I burned with a candle, and took a screwdriver to scraping off some of the wood to create texture like in the photo. The top right I left black with the murky paint and pour, but added a moon to symbolize the night drive. And, the bottom right I built up with modeling paste and added in colors.
I felt it important to include the pieces of the polaroid photograph to emphasize the piece. Each section and square is separate, yet comes together to create unity.
