Gray Love is a painting that was made by using my fingers, hands, rags, and towels. For this piece, I knew I wanted to do another self-portrait, and wanted to do a brick background. However, I didn't want to have myself stick out. Instead, I focused on using the same color palette throughout to blend myself into the background.Â
At the time, using the colors that I did was an act of symbolism for the mood I was feeling and emotions. I didn't really love myself, but wanted that love. Hence, the heart, and hence having myself become part of the brick wall. I felt stuck, and cemented in. I honestly did not like creating self-portraits, or having myself in a picture. Most times, it felt as though I were a facade.
Interestingly, though, came this painting after a few other self-portraits that depicted feelings almost the exact opposite (although, the majority all had the same color palette).
Later on, after its creation, I began to have more love for myself. In a way, I can say, seeing myself depicted like this sparked change.
This piece was made by painting with hands and fingers.
This piece was entered into the Nebraska State Fair, and received 3rd place ranking in the Oil & Acrylic Media Division; Portraits/Comp-Figures Class.
