Originally titled with the poem "My brother is not dead, but my brother is not home. He is somewhere distant, without a flag to fold. Every passing hour, he is tender, staid. He forgets the very hour before for his country his life he did lay", the piece was renamed with the name from a print done earlier in my art career. Both the name and stylistic choices made within the work reminisce on a soldier's life before, during, and after service.
Within the piece, nothing seems to portray what the individual's life was like before going into service. In fact, no emblems or stars are featured either, leaving the viewer to ponder who this person was and is still… still. A still life of a still soldier.
This piece was made by painting with hands and fingers.
This work was part of my Bachelor of Fine Arts Thesis Exhibition: "Honour" * "Dishonour", where the exhibition focused on how to honor my nation's Veterans and Current Service Members. To learn more about the show, click on the link above, or click here.
