The first word that came to mind as I toiled away to make this, was not Pain; but, in fact, anguish. Yet, there was something about the pain, the usage of torn fabric that tore me up in regards to the representation of stripes and bandages. The melancholy colors, the way they flow across the surface, much like the fabric, only added to it. That's what I want people to notice, but in subtleness; almost as if this emotion is hidden. The effects of war, what are they? We think about them and the heavy weight carried, but we don’t think about how it affects each individual, how it produces this immense agony and drifting.
This piece was made by painting with hands and fingers.
This work was part of my Bachelor of Fine Arts Thesis Exhibition: "Honour" * "Dishonour", where the exhibition focused on how to honor my nation's Veterans and Current Service Members. To learn more about the show, click on the link above, or click here.
