Bottom: Either, Nearly Full Image.
Phrase Series consists of three phrases that I have either come across, or have heard of in relation to the treatment of Service Members. In particular, I tried to contextualize certain symbols or words so that they would stand out in regards to honouring and dishonouring Veterans and those still in the Service. In addition, I considered the inclusion of the small objects outside the phrases themselves.
In order:
Folded.
It's one thing to read about a veteran in a newspaper (if that), and another to give them due service. For military funerals, a flag is typically folded into a triangle, then given to a family member in recognition of their loved one.
Small Object: Folded (painted in light of flag) newspaper with the faces of soldiers on it in about the same manner as a folded flag (newspaper too short).
Record.
My family and I experienced this ourselves at my grandfather's funeral. (I didn't notice until my mother pointed it out).
A military member holds a trumpet and looks to be playing, but the "trumpet" houses a record of the song "Taps".
Small Object: Cassette Tape as a stand in for a recording.
Either.
In recognition of MIA and POW.
Yellow Ribbons are tied around a tree as a nod to those absent or missing in light of serving. They are traditionally given to loved ones.
Small Object: Yellow Ribbon with written Scripture.
The original digital images of these phrases came about in 2021.
They were framed in 2022.
The small objects partnered with the phrases in 2022.
Record was updated in 2024 to say "Taps" instead of "the taps".
This work was part of my Bachelor of Fine Arts Thesis Exhibition: "Honour" * "Dishonour", where the exhibition focused on how to honor my nation's Veterans and Current Service Members. To learn more about the show, click on the link above, or click here.
